Reading

Good writers are good readers, it’s that simple and that difficult

I read in the genres I wish to write in, but also outside of these. I read news, some blogs or stacks, and ridiculous social media memes. My kindle TBR mountain is exactly that, a mountain, but I include reading as part of my writing day. All can be inspiring or tiring, enjoyably escapist or a plodding chore. Some can and do help me with ideas or in ways to improve my own writing.

When I really enjoy something read, this is the place I will collect and share them.

Reading isn’t just Reading…

As writers we are often told to read ‘like a writer’ ie to look for story elements, note structure or writing that is great or not so much. Sometimes I do that, but sometimes I read like a bookclub attendee (with a series of questions to answer) or read like a copyist - a way to improve my own work by copying portions of classics.

But mostly, mostly I read to escape and read for pleasure. And with so many books available to us in so many formats, I also give up on many books if I just don’t enjoy them.
